If you haven’t heard about Grass Clippings Rolling Hills Golf Course, let me save you the Google search—this course has become the Instagram darling of golf in Phoenix.
This little par-3 gem is punching way above its weight class with trendy vibes, night golf, and music events. But does it live up to the hype? After 12 rounds last year (yes, 12!) and some unforgettable experiences, I’m giving you my unfiltered thoughts.
First Impressions: A Par-3 With Personality
Most par-3 courses are… well, forgettable. Not this one. Grass Clippings Rolling Hills screams character the moment you step onto the property. The layout is short and sweet, but the energy? That’s where it shines. The mint conditions, lively clubhouse, and playlist pumping through the speakers make it clear—this isn’t your grandpa’s par-3.
Playing here during the day is excellent for honing your wedge game, but at night, the course transforms into a glow-in-the-dark playground for golfers of all skill levels. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to party on a golf course, this is the place.

What Makes It Special: The Vibe
Here’s the thing: Grass Clippings Rolling Hills isn’t trying to be a copycat (and thank goodness for that). Instead, it’s designed for golfers who prioritize fun over formality.
And if you think the vibes end with casual play, think again. The events here are next-level. I attended the Grass Clippings Open and the Good Good Desert Open, and both felt like mini Coachellas with golf clubs. Think food trucks, live music, and an electric crowd.

The Course: Short but Sweet
Now, let’s talk about the layout. Rolling Hills is a straightforward par-3 course with short holes ranging from 90 to 180 yards. Don’t let the length fool you, though—this course has plenty of charm.
The greens are surprisingly well-maintained for a course with such high foot traffic, and the bunkers? They’re placed just sneaky enough to keep you honest. This is the ideal spot if you want to work on your short game or warm up for a full round somewhere else.
City: Tempe
Course Difficulty: Easy
Favorite Hole: Hole 8 – A short downhill shot with a postcard view of downtown Tempe in the background.
Why You Should Play: This par-62 course is short but sweet, perfect for a quick round without sacrificing fun.
Opportunities for Improvement
No course is perfect, and Rolling Hills has a few quirks. While the atmosphere is lively, it can sometimes border on chaos. If you’re hoping for a quiet, meditative round of golf, this isn’t the place.
Another challenge? The pace of play during peak times. Night golf, in particular, can get backed up because people are having fun. You’ve got groups taking selfies, debating music choices, or just soaking in the vibes—great for the party, not so great for a quick round.
Final Verdict: Worth the Hype?
Absolutely. Grass Clippings Rolling Hills is more than just a place to play—it’s an experience. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer, a beginner, or someone who wants a good time under the stars, this course delivers.
Its unique vibe, solid layout, and endless social opportunities make it the perfect course for any occasion. Date night? Check. Quick morning round? Check. Group birthday bash? Double check.
But don’t just take my word for it. Rolling Hills has been recognized by Golf Digest as one of the “Best Par-3 Courses in America” and featured in Golf.com for its innovative approach to golf culture.
